- Answer: The province of Ontario got its name from Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario gets its name from an Indigenous Iroquoian and Huron-Wendat word, ontarí:io, which translates to “lake of shining waters,” “great lake,” or “beautiful lake”
- Bonus: Lake/State Michigan naming. The lake was named first. The territory and the state adopted the name when Michigan joined the Union in 1837.Lake Michigan gets its name from an Indigenous Ojibwe word, michi-gami or mishigami, which means “great water” or “large lake”
