- How about some nature stuff?
- Question: Why is a group of crows called a murder?
-
Answer: Because of old folk tales, medieval wordplay, and the birds’ dark scavenging habits.Omens of death: Crows eat dead animals and were often seen near battlefields, gallows, and cemeteries, making people link them to death.Bird trials: An old myth says that a flock of crows will gather around a sick or bad crow to judge it, and if it is guilty, the group kills it.
Poetic names: During the Middle Ages, English hunters and nobles used creative and spooky names for groups of animals (like a parliament of owls or an unkindness of ravens) as a fun way to show off.
Not scientific: Scientists and bird experts do not use the word “murder.” They just call them a flock.
